Viral Rape Video in Istanbul Triggers Re-arrest of Suspects
Istanbul – Weeks before a brutal double murder, a case involving the rape of several women in a public square in Istanbul gained attention after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
On September 24, in the Beyoglu district of Istanbul, two men allegedly raped a 25-year-old woman. Initially, both suspects, who had prior criminal records, were arrested by authorities but later released due to the victim not pressing formal charges.
However, after footage of the assault spread widely on social media, sparking public outrage and protests by women’s rights activists, authorities swiftly rearrested the two men. They are now facing serious charges, including "sexual assault" and "deprivation of personal freedom."
Women's rights organizations condemned the initial release of the suspects, citing it as clear evidence of systemic failures in protecting women. Activists continue to push for stricter legal reforms to ensure the safety and protection of sexual violence victims.
